I have recently aquired a new sat system from DirecWay, I installed an old computer I had laying around as my server for 4 machines, running Windows 2000 Pro, the connection was shared right and I have internet on all my system, I'm using an SMC switching hub, so there everything is fine, my problem is that it will even do this on the server, I'll start downloading something like linux for example and it will start at about 200K per/s which I think is good for this system, but then all of a sudden it will drop down to 4K and then shutdown the download for about 10 min., so I have to kind of regulate it at about 25KB/s and it works fine for about 30min. then it will do the same, this is from all my systems and even when downloading from the server, very very bad, this is what I need to know, is it just the fact that the machine is such an old system, or is there something else wrong, from what I think, tell me if I'm wrong here, the old computer is getting congested with too much information all at once, so it just looses everything and shuts down downloading and HTTP, until it grabs enough bandwidth again and resumes the connection? Is this too far fetched or is this right? Here's the system:
Pentium 166Mhz
64MB Ram
4GB Drive
PCI USB Card(where the Satellite connection comes in)
and PCI NIC CardCould all this be part of the problem, or one friend suggested setting up a gateway, I don't know quite how to do this, could some one give me some advice? If you think a gateway would work, then could someone tell me how to set up a gateway? If it's the system well do you think a 400Mhz with 168MB ram would work fine? I don't want to get the new system if I don't have to? Or is this simply a problem with the boxes themselves that receive from the sat? Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Joel

Joel,
create an account over at
http://www.broadbandreports.com/then go to the "forums" link and drop down to ISPs tab and make the DirectWay forum a "fav" then post your question - and any future DW related inquiries there. Many of the BBR forums provide better info than the ISP's own tech support. You'll get very good assistance there.
