I ran Windows Update which installed SP4. Now the computer just reboots after the Windows Startup screen. It doesn't matter which F8 boot option is selected. It just continuously reboots.

To start Windows 2000 using the last known good configuration

Click Options, and then click Print to print these instructions. They will not be available after you shut down your computer in step 2.
Click Start, and then click Shut Down.
Click Restart, and then click OK.
When you see the message Please select the operating system to start, press F8.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER.
NUM LOCK must be off before the arrow keys on the numeric keypad will function.

Use the arrow keys to highlight an operating system, and then press ENTER.

Experienced the same issue today. My box appears to be toast.

Is rebooting during "applying computer settings."

Last Known Good is ineffective.

Any other ideas???????

I had this problem before when I was installing some software. It turned out that the software had not completly installed. I booted to safe mode with the disk in and when I logged on it finished the install. After that everything worked fine. If you can boot to safe mode I would try uninstalling SP4. Good Luck!

I had a similar problem (continual blue screen on reboot), but I was able to boot into safe mode and uninstall SP4. I wasn't sure if you had tried that in addition to trying "last known good configuration".

I'm just curious as to what motherboard you're using. I have an ASUS P4S533. I updated the drivers and tried re-installing SP4, and then I got continual reboots without even getting a blue screen.

Again, though, I was able to boot to safe mode and uninstall SP4...

I loaded SP4 on my mom's PC 2 days ago. This morning she heard a pop and the PC wont start at all now. (probobly unrelated to SP4, more likey that the electrical storm did something, but hey i might as well complain)

I am a MORON and didn't back up the previous installation. So NOW I can't uninstall the blasted thing.

Seems like I was also trying to install the SP4 tools at the same time and cancelled it because the SP4 was so large. Could this be the issue?

Thank you for the great feedback. I've made some progress with F8 and Debugging Mode, followed by removing the check mark from Automatic Reboot in Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup & recovery. After doing that, safe mode seems to work. MB is an Intel 440BX. I'm still working on it. In my case, SP4 crashed almost at the end, backed out its changes and supposedly returned the system back to its pre-SP4 state. It apparently screwed up. Now instead of rebooting, it just stays on the blue screen--so that is progress. My system is completely backed up to tape, something I should have done before running Windows Update. I did not expect this productivity loss due to running Windows update and may have to reinstall W2000 and all my software again, or upgrade to XP (other issues I know).

Have tried every single option on the F8 menu and the machine still re-boots after the loading Windows screen. Auto recovery doesn't work neither does recovery console. My machine is a HP Kayak XM600 which was running Win 2000 Server and set up to be my firms new print server. Wish I hadn't installed SP4 now or at least taken an image beforehand. There is nothing on the Microsoft website about this which is very poor and typical of MS Support. Looks like I'm going to have to re-install from scratch unless anybody has any other ideas?

After installing Win SP4 my system rebooted each time it came to the login dialog. Had to recover with Windows install disk. Now shutdown hangs the system. This is the first time I've download a fix from Microsoft that wrecked my OS.
