Comment: Hi, I was using my W2000 Pro sp2 for about 6 months already, everything seems ok. Yesterday, I got hung when I'm using the windows, so I reboot the comouter then it kept showing that "A Disk Read Error Occured..." because I can't even get into windows so I used W2000 boot disks and chose recovery(but it didn't ask me for the password, which I can't access WinNT folder and if I look for dir under c: it will say wrong level something... so I can't find any folder under c:), then I ran chkdsk to checked it and it says there is unrepairable problem on my disk and I didn't know what should I do next...fixboot or fixmbr...so I just used fixmbr and restart the computer. Then my computer kept saying that it can't boot up...and want me to insert bootable disk...I tried to use W2000 boot disks again but it shown that Disk I/O error ...00001000 right after I finish my 4th boot disk and then jump to the page that I can choose install, Recovery, or delete W2000 ...but this time it said that I have brand new HD if I choose Recovery which meant I can't get into Recovery Console prompt anymore. Can someone please tell me how to solve this problem I just need to get into windows to backup my data/_\ p.s. HD cable seems fine and CMOS got my HD

Reply: sounds bad, you could put another hardrive in the pc, get back up and running, them, install the original harddrive the pc should boot from the new hard disk, then when you have rebooted, scan the contents of your original disk and transfer the data accross. question your original disk is it partitioned, if it is and you have data saved not on the system partition but your otther partition, format the system partition, before doing all the above. once you have access your original disk, using the new admin account that has been created with your fresh installation, take ownership of all the files, even better if you can transfer every thing to a fat 32 partition, then all the permissions will be automatically removed from the files. hope all that makes sense mark

Reply: To Mark, I have thought about to install a new HD and then get access to my original HD's data, but for my original HD, there is only one primary partition and everytihng is on that one partition, so I am wondering that if I did what you told me above, can I still get my data back? I plan to reinstall W2000 Pro in a later time but I just want to know is there any chance to have my school's work backuped, 'cause I usually backup my data after each semester...as you know this fall isn't finish yet..>"< P.S. I have another computer with WindowsME system, is that ok to connect my old HD to it as a second HD and get data back from my WindowsME's system??? Oh..and thanks you all who replied me ^^

Reply: If windows cant read that drive to boot, Norton Ghost will more than likely be not able to read it. Sounds like the heads somehow scraped the disk on the hard drive. Forget about ever using that drive again if thats the case.
