There was a problem of vsmom.exe (Zone Alarm) using more than 95% of CPU time sometime after connecting to Internet. This problem started appearing first on 27th Aug'. We tried few things like updating Zone Alarm nothing helped. After reading one of the posts on this forum (by Dave), disabling Mail Safe solved the problem. You have to restart the computer after disabling Mail Safe.

In my opinion disabling Mail Safe should not always be necessary, what works in most cases is to completely shutdown Zone Alarm and vsmon.exe then empty the C:|WINNT|Internet Logs directory and then reboot. It will wipe out everything in the program module and you will need to assign privileges to all your programs that require access to internet again. Sometimes the program gets corrupted whenever you uninstall/install or reinstall programs and applications.

Just as a data point, I have this problem and don't have mailsafe enabled. I'll try Jakes suggestion (tried it once, seemed to work for a few days but then problems re-emerged). I was hoping that the recent ZA update would fix it, but nope. They won't even acknowledge that the problem exists. Glad it's free!

Another data point: I have ZA Pro 3.1.395 on Win 2000 SP2. When logged in as me (in Admin group), Outlook (Express) works fine. When logged in as a non-Admin member of my family, Outlook causes vsmon.exe to take off, consuming 99% of CPU and rendering the machine completely unresponsive. Tried disabling MailSafe - no change. Tried deleting all files in c:\winnt\Internet Logs - also no change. The only sure way to prevent the problem is to completely shut down ZA during use of Outlook. I've logged a case with Zone Labs.

I don't know what Silence could be talking about. Barry said he has 3.1.395, which is the latest on Zone Labs website.

I have the same problem, although it happens even when I'm logged in as myself.

I've got the same problem and I've got the most recent version of zone alarm pro 3.1.395. Any hopes of getting help from zonealarm? I've had no luck getting support from them before on other issues.

I have also the latest Zone Alarm Pro, and
have the same problems...
I noticed that in the Program set up
you can click on "components" and there you can see a lot of small dll files + programs running after rebooting...using cpu for a couple of minutes.

Hi..Since my last post I did some additional checking. And I've come to the conclusion the visiting a particular web site can cause this problem and I can reproduce it. I can visit lots of sites and all works well. But when I go to JC Penney site after a few pages the problem occurs. If I shutdown ZA the Penney site works fine. Seems something on one or more of their pages is freaking out za. vsmon.exe usage goes to about 75% and iexplorer.exe goes to about 25% and both just sit there.

I had an older version of Zone Alarm and things worked just fine. Then I upgraded to 3.1.395 and my vsmon problems began. Its locks up under all sorts of cirumstances, but particularly when viewing an email with an image attachment. Also, whenver I try to run suftware will uses full screen mode (eg, games).

Add me to the list! I'm using win2k, ZAPRO 3.1.395
vsmon.exe consumes 99% CPU after trying to collect e-mail using Outlook Express. I can download maybe 20 or so e-mails, then vsmon grabs CPU usage and thats the end of that!
I started off looking at hardware, changed modems, reinstalled all my app's (formatted HDD etc),changed my virus scanner from PC-cillin (which doesn't get good ratings anyway) to NOD32 (which gets brilliant reviews!) and ZAPRO still craps out!
I also have placed a support query on ZA's site. No response yet.
Maybe time to look elsewhere?

I'm having the same problem. Using the Pro version. Definitely related to email. Happens overnight. If I can manage to kill vsmon.exe then the system recovers, otherwise I have to power off my system. This is a nightmare.

(winXP sp1, office xp sp2, athlon 600mhz, 256 ram) Upgraded to ZAPro 3.1.395 a few months ago. Just started having problems today. Seems to be triggered by outlook. As described above, vsmon to 90+% cpu. I didn't make any changes in the last day or two, not sure what triggered sudden problem. Using norton systemworks and Cloudmark's spamnet on outlook.

Well count me in too. When I tried to do some simulations today, my machine lagged out. When I looked in my Taskmanager ZA (vsmon.exe) was using 99% of my CPU.

I deleted all the logs and restarted, problem is gone now, but for how long?? And by deleting my log files I also deleted my ZA settings :(

I'm having the same problem.
Went to paypal.com, dinked with my account a bit, then clicked the "log out" link. My system basically came to a screeching halt. Even moving the mouse pointer around was frequently not possible. There was minimal disk activity. I was BARELY able to get the task manager up (it took about two minutes for the window to repaint), which showed vsmon.exe consuming 99% of my CPU. I rebooted and everything was fine.
I'm running Windows XP, with Service Pack 1 installed.

I'll join the party - have same issue.
CPU 500mhz - 256mb RAM, 3gb free disk space & defragged.
Win2K, SP3, Eudora 5.1.1, IE 6.0.2800.1106IS SP1, Zonealarm 3.1.395 (no updates available - Automatic Update) paid version, Grisoft AV software.
VSMON.EXE has started pulling 100% CPU and wont be killed via Task Manager when downloading email (usual small text messages, no attachments no HTML when it started.)
Of course when using 100% CPU everything happens in ultra slow motion.
Im logging an incident with ZA but wont hold out much hope as I find their response time totally unacceptable for a "professional software supply house".

Also Jorg, what log files did you delete to lose yr settings I renamed all the ZALOG*.TXT files in \WINNT\INTERNET LOGS and restarted ZA and have all my settings intact ?

The following is a quoted lifted directly from another forum:

""I had a problem on W2000 with ZA pro getting into a fight with NAV 2002 on a
reboot - to the point that I thought the machine would never start.
Solution was to 'uncheck' 'Load ZA pro at startup' and then start by hand
after NAV finished.

Curiously moving the ZApro icon into the allusers\...\startup directory runs OK
and saves me having to remember anything. I guess this just changes the
sequence of things.

The problem has continued over several releases of ZA pro.""

Maybe there is something here.

I've had the exact same problem as everyone else with ZA Pro (latest version) and WIN2K. I finally had to resort to installing an older version of ZA and everything seems to be fine now. I had logged a ticket with Zone Labs about 3 months ago and the only response was an automated email which was of no use. Great support there guys! Still have not heard anything back from this crappy company. I'm looking for a replacement.

Same issue here guys...worked great yesterday but locks today with 99 cpu (nav 1)... Using Outlook 2k, NAV2k on Win2k sp3.

I guess its of little use to contact ZA... Haven't tried the fixes above as results seem to vary.

I had the same problem here. Appears when retrieving email with attached files. Running W2K, Outlook 2000, Norton Anti Virus 2002, and Zone Alarm. Good news. VSMON problem seems to have disapeared when I turned off "mail safe" in zone alarm. Only turned that off an hour ago, but system seems stable now.

OK - I'm now a member of this club. Experienced the same problem. After reading previous posts regarding Outlook, email downloads w/ attachments, and ZA I recognized a pattern.

Just reproduced the problem and I can confirm the sequence listed in previous posts and my experience outlined above. Does disabling MailSafe really fix this problem? What are the ramifications of disabling MailSafe? Has anyone seen this occur w/ Outlook Express?
