Ok I have adware on my system maybe even a virus. But any virus or Adware scanner crashes when I try to run it. I narrowed it down to my "local settings" folder. I have used Norton 2002 with up-to-date definitions, Nortons online scanner, Ad-Aware, and Housecall online scanner. They always crash when they scan my local settings file. Any advice. Please help...

Try narrowing it down to the file and see if you can get rid of it manually.

You could also try doing your virus/adware scans in safe mode.

Crashed everything in safe mode. Crashed IE while doing the trendmicro scans, same as symantecs online scan. Trying to narrow it down but I've got empty folders that it won't let me delete. Still trying.

Well I downloaded and tried ZoneAlarm. It crashed during it's first scan but then it detected the virus trying to do something and got rid of it. Now everything scans fine. Don't know what it was though I had 4.

Try scanning your drive for errors. It could be a bad sector.

c:\chkdsk c: /f

Got another 2kPro or XP computer handy?

When scanning customer computers, I usually slave their HD into mine and then scan through my OS.

Any nasties lie dormant during the process and can not migrate to my HD. Also makes for easy removal of infections due to the fact that none of them are running.

Do you get a access denied error?
It might be that the maleware/virus has permisions set on the folder so that you cant access it or delete it.

What are these folders?
Can you take ownershiop of the folders or change permissions on them?
