I had an error with the name .exe that my AVG virus gaurd found and removed. Now I get the message "Cannot find .exe or one of it's components. Please check path etc. I have looked under the Run entries in the registry as well as win.ini and system.ini, to no avail. Any suggestions, please?

Yeah, the 'error' part sounds kind of fishy. If you had a virus, the offending host file may have been quarantined or deleted. I would use your virus activity log to identify the virus and the host file, and then find out whether the application can be repaired. If it cannot, then you may end up reloading the app.
Another possibility is that the virus changed registry settings before the AV software stopped it, and is now calling upon an infected application that has been removed. This happened to me with the SOBIG virus. Again, identify the virus, and find out what the registry changes were, and change them back. Some AV companies make utilities to change the settings back so you don't have to get your hands dirty.
Backup your registry before you do any plumbing in there.
Good luck
