Comment:

I have read many posts regarding slow computers and I wish my problems were fixed. But they aren't. About two weeks ago my computer started getting progressively slower. It is driving me crazy! Please help!

I use Windows 2000.

Sytem under 'My Computer' says....

x86 Family 6 Model 6 Stepping
0
AT/AT COMPATIBLE
261,552 KB RAM

I have ran spybot, check disk, defrag, Registry Supreme Pro, and McAfee Virus Scan.
I tried Disk Cleanup but it just stays on 'calculating space'.

I know very little about computers and just have run out of ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ryan

try pressing control alt and delete and look in your task manager to see what programs are using up your memory and cpu. it is quite likely a virus is doing this. try using AVG anti virus as it is much better than most anti virus software out there.

The System Idle Process uses 96 CPU's and then there are a couple of things using 1-4 sporatically.

Acrobat is using the most mem at 22,620.

The CPU usage is at 4%. I opened up Explorer (which took about 1-2 minutes) and the usage spiked at 14 %.

I am downloading AVG right now. But, it's taking quite some time.

Will report once installed.

Thanks

Ok, AVG reported no viruses. One note though, the CPU usage was between 95% to 100% during the scan. Almost all of which was from McShield.exe. Is that normal.

I have also run Highjack this and fixed the "fix immeditely" threads.

What else should I be looking for????

Thanks

Ryan

Right click the hard drives(C,D etc) and choose Tools tab.Error-Check the drives first and Defrag. You may also set the memory exchange file(page file virtual memory) under Control Panel/System/Advanced Tab/Performace Options.Click Change.Set C drive to 432-864 Mb.You need a regular defrag schedule(once a month or more often depending on how much you use Add/Remove feature)to keep this memory in one block as much as possible.Do not overfill C drive with programs and data.Keep about 15-20% or more free space and defragged.Good luck.

McShield.exe is part of McAfee. If you have their AV running as well as AVG it is bound to stuff up your overheads. Sounds like you need to uninstall McAfee AV.
