OK...I've never seen this before.

I'm trying to right click and save a picture from the web...but it won't save the file extension as .jpg if I try to rename it as I save. When I search for the saved file it is there but only as File Type: FILE. It will open if I use Open With: Internet Explorer or Irfan view (Irfan tells me its a jpg with incorrect extension and allows me to save as .jpg extension).

Here's the odd part... if I right click Save picture as and DON'T try to rename it as I'm saving... it will save as a .jpg extension with no problem. It's only when I try to give it my own file name as I'm saving it that the .jpg extension isn't attached.

It DOESN'T do this when right clicking Save picture as and the original file type is a .bmp file. It allows me to rename that as I'm saving. Same for .mov .avi .wav... etc...I can save all those under any name I want and the extensions attach fine.

I can create and save a .bmp picture using paint...then save as .jpg conversion file with no problem either.

I'm constantly saving car photos, electronic schematics...etc from the internet as .jpg files but need to name them as I go because I'll never be able to find them under the original file name. I'll end up with Jpgs saved as FILE with no extension. Need to fix this problem.

Very strange....Anyone have any ideas?

Hi Dave,

Try to Disable the show known file extensions feature in the explorer>folder options. Then save again.
I dont know this works, plz try.
(If it is not working plz, pardon)

You can also save the file surrounding the complete filename with quotation marks.
eg. "myfile.jpg"

Also, if your Temporary Internet Files folder is full (as I understand) it prevents saving as file types other than .gif and .bmp.

Thanks for the suggestions.

This is real odd. I've never had this problem on any PC and it just started yesterday. Of course...2 days ago I killed 5 viruses including the dreaded i-worm bofra. AVG couldnt heal any of them even in safe mode. Had to delete the files. Wonder if a small windows file got lost related to file extensions. You'd think I would get an error or something though.

Well.. I tried the folder options suggestions but no good. I did come up with an idea. If its not attaching an extension automatically...I'll try manually. It works. I can right click Save Picture and use my own filename as long as I add a .jpg or .bmp to the file myself. Solves my immediate problem of saving pics but the question remains....

Why is this happening to being with?
The mystery of life...or the mystery of windows...What's more perplexing?

If you have any other ideas as to the cause let me know.

Thanks for the help.
Dave
