Comment:

I am currently running Veritas BackupExec 9.0 to backup our network to DLT tapes. I have two questions....
1.) I am going to purchase the Advanced Open File Agent. I think I just need to purchase i license and install it on my actual media/backup server, correct? I don't think I need to buy a license for every server I want to back up??
2.) The SQL Agent....If I don't buy it, what's the easiest way to backup a SQL database?

Thanks.

Similar to the Remote Agent for Backupexec :

A Remote Agent License must be installed on the Backup Exec server and the Remote Agent component must be installed and running as a service on the target server. One Remote Agent license is required for each remote server that need to be protected. (on Each Server)

The Open File agent is a remote Agent and hence has, " Open File Option supports protection of open files on servers running Windows NT 4 and Windows 2000 and is licensed per protected server " (Per Serve)

While you could install ONE license on as many remote servers as you want, it would violate the Letter of the End User License Agreement. As for SQL since you would not have a way to backup the Database while it is Mounted and running. The only other option is to issues a PRE Processing command to STOP the SQL Server Services (Put it in a batch File). Then you can backup the entire datase. Then a POST command that starts the SQL Services (again in a batch FIle). This however prevents users from accessing the SQL Database while the Services are stoped. Good luck
