Hi, I would like to know how to set up Windows 2000 as a router PC, I have read it can be done (a long time a go in Maximum PC), but I am not sure how. I have all the win2k releases, so if I need a server version that is no problem, though if possible I would like to do in in Pro (as it will run faster). The reason I want to is because my family is getting DSL on monday, and we would like to save money and not buy a router. All the computers on my home network use windows (XP Pro/ Home, 98SE, ME).

I know this much: you need two NICs, which I have.

Thanx in advance

P.S. I have googled for about the past half-hour looking on how to do this.

You don't need to use Server. Look up Internet Connection Sharing in your 2000 Help and Support section.

Life is more painless for those who are brainless.

But don't I need DHCP for the modem?

internet Connection Sharing acts as a Basic DHCP Server and assigns the W2K PC 192.168.0.1 as the IP address, The other PC's are set to Auto recive an IP Address from the W2K PC.

The connection to the DSL Modem is a seperate issue, and has no bearing on ICS.

If you want low overhead then look at a Linux solution like Smoothwall:

I figured it out, but thanks for the help. I installed Win2000 server and set up a NAT routing scheme and DHCP. DHCP works fine, and all seems well for the setup of the DSL modem, the service gets activated on the 12th (I was a week off on my first post, sorry about that). The Win2k pc also works as a good server for my Lexmark Optra R. The only problem now is a firewall soultion for server windows, Kerio won't install, and ZoneAlarm caused serious instability, this is a seperate problem, which I will post seperately. Agan, thanks for the suggestions.

Dear

Use Wingate for interner sharing

Install wingate on that system on which dsl is directly connected ... than add another NIC card on same system and connect that card to switch and other systems on that switch ....
Assigne IP address to NIc that is connected to switch and use this IP as gateway on othere system
bye
