to fix the Code 28 "Data is invalid" error I was getting whilst trying to install a driver for my Canon Powershot A40 Camera; the only difference is that the solution applies to PCI, and this camera uses USB.

I found the right VEN folder, applied full permissions, rebooted (to be sure), reinstalled the Canon driver, plugged in the USB and got the same Code 28 error.

If anyone has a tweak to apply this solution to USB, I'd be very grateful!
