This may seem like a stupid question, but i dont know anything at all about the whole USB 2.0. I was reading on a website that the USB 2.0 Driver is supported or somethin like that in the Service Pack 4 (which i have downloaded.) I want to purchase a device that requires USB 2.0, is this 'driver support' all that is needed to connect this device or is there a totally different "port" i have to purchse that is USB 2.0 ??

You also need to have a USB 2 port on your machine.
To find out go to Device manager under USB.
If you have USB 2 then it will read as Enhanced USB.
If you don't see the word Enhanced then it is USB1.xBryan

my USB port(s) is not listed as "enhanced" so can i not hook this device up to my computer? is it possible to purchase a 2.0 USB port?

USB 2 devices are backward compatible to USB 1, the thruput of data is just slower.
If this is a Desktop PC you will need a PCI USB2 Card with an NEC Chipset. If this is a Laptop/Notebook you will need a PCMCIA USB2 Card with an NEC Chipset and power adaptor from PS2 port.

FYI: SP3 had USB 2 drivers as well.

Installing the USB 2.0 card in a PCI slot is the first step. For Win98 and 2k setup the drivers. You will probably get an IRQ selection or sharing problem with errors in the System Properties. It is not easily resolved by trial and error. You may have a bios setting to redetect all the IRQ's on the next reboot(if so reset this after use to avoid redetecting on the next boot up).Or you may have to setup Win 2000 from scratch to get the IRQ's shared properly. When shopping for a PCI USB 2.0 card you will notice that some manufacturers like VIA have cards with 4 external ports and one with one internal port that will come in handy when you need to setup an internal USB drive(like an internal flash card reader).Good luck.
