I have two window 98 PCs linke up with my Window 2000 PC via a Hub. File sharing was okay until after I gone for 4 weeks vacation. My partner told me my PC ask for password changes and after 14 days it expire because no one know my password. After ha all my window 98 machines cannot access any the Data Shareing drive on my Window 2000 PC anymore. It kept on asking for user name and password to access my PC which I have no clue at all. I click on the properties of my network setting and found the "file and printer sharing for Microsoft network" become a shadow line. Try re-install and sill he same. Can someone help!!

If I understand correctly, you can see your win2k shares from your win98 boxes but you are denied access to them when trying from a win98 box. Is that accurate?

If so, then everything about your network is fine: the problem is in your file-level permissions on the win2k box. From the w2k box, right-click your share folder > properties > permissions and inspect there who is allowed to view/read/write to that resource.

Also, MS networking "trusts" identical usernames on another box within the workgroup (immediate network) more than it "trusts" different usernames. Try accessing the w2k share from a w98 box while logged onto the w98 box with the same username as who owns the win2k share. (whew!).

G'luck.

Thank you, No I can not see the W2k shares from any of my Win98 boxes, but I can see the win 98 shares from my W2k box.

The share properties of the data folder on my W2k alreday allow everyone to read/write/view all files.

The only potential problem area I see is when you click to check the properties 's dialogue boxes of the network adaptor, the line "file and printer sharing for microsoft network" is not working (become a grey shadow). even I try to delete and re-install still cannot activate it again.

Any comment?

Try going to "Users and Password" on Win2K Control Panel and set up new usernames and/or passwords to grant access to Win 98 units. Use new password on Win98's when logging on to net.

Good luck!
