My son wants to upgrade his OS from Windows 2000 to Windows XP. I've checked out prices and have a question. I've seen that there are full-blown versions and then there are upgrade versions. What is the difference?

The difference is in the price. If you are eligable to use an upgrade then it is more cost effective. If you atempt to use an upgrade version and you don't meet the upgrade criteria you will not be able to register the OS.

Below is a chart showing the various upgrade paths. As is stated in the link below you must also consider the hardware requirements.

There isn't alot of difference between Win2000 pro and XP pro. The learning curve for 2000 is steeper but I assume your son already knows how to use 2000.

Thanks for the info, very helpful. One question......if he uses the upgrade from W2000 Pro to XP Pro will he have to reinstall everything (games, software, etc.)? Or by using the upgrade does he avoid that?

Look at the site linked to below. I suggest you read the entire article and take heed about drivers. Some hardware like printers and scanners may not have drivers available.

Actually the cost of Windows XP would far outweigh the value of the PC base unit.

550mhz would not give a decent experience and certainly slower than W2K.

It may be cost effective to buy a newer second-user PC with XP already installed.

In the UK a decent P4 2.0Ghz Tower sells for around £70.00 the same price as XP OEM Version
