unsupported files

occasionally I will receive an e-mail with an attachment which will not allow me to open because it states that it is an unsupported file. Is there some way that I can open these files. I have Abode Reader and tried to pen it with no success.

Adobe Reader only veiws PDF files. List the 3 letter file extension.
