When I turn off my USB printer I get the message "unsafe removal of device". I get the option to check the box to show this icon on the taskbar. The box is check but it does not show on the taskbar. How can I add the icon?

Your toolbar may be set to hide the icons. Right click a blank part of that toolbar and check properties.

The toolbar is visable and shows other icons, it just doesn't show this icon.

How are you turning off your USB printer. Is the printer equipped with an ON/OFF switch. I ask this because I have a couple of USB only printers and they don't have power switches. Obviously Win2000 doesn't like this to be done. Why do you shut it off? I don't think there is any power draw when sitting there waiting. I should have thought about this before my last reply. I use a USB inkjet with Win2000 and there is no printer icon unless the printer is sctively spooling or printing. Same goes for Win98se.

I have an epson picturemate with an on/off switch. When I turn it off I get unsafe removal of device message. Will it harm the system if I just turn it off? Or should I go to control panel, add/remove hardware and select the uplug devise option? Its just a pain to go through this process everytime I turn off the printer.
