*Apologies if this IS the MSBlast, don't want to waste peoples time, but I'm really not sure*
Hi guys, can anyone help me. I appear to have been struck down by some virus which is making my computer act very bizzarly. The main problems are that the copy and paste function refuse to work, the search functions throughout the computer don't work any more, all LAN connections have dissapeared, the unistall/reinstall option in the control panel reveals a blank screen and strangest of all the image preview on any folder has moved to the bottom of the screen, stretched out and won't display any pictures in fact it locks up when I try!At first I did have a message about svchost but thats no longer appearing. I'd love to run Norton but the biggest problem is that the 'Windows Installer' will just not run it. So no programs can be installed (or of course removed) I did of course immediatly jump to the conclusion that it was the MSBlast virus but am now not so sure as I've run all the patches available and nothing. I've installed the latest service patch run online virus checkers to no avail. The only other similarity to MSBlast is that media player won't run telling me that 'System is low on memory' (I think not)
Can anyone shed some light on this?
Cheers! Chris

Installing the Microsoft patch will not rid msblast.exe if it is already in your machine. Sounds to me like it may be there. Here is a link to Symantec's fix; Click Here. I'd see if this will help.

Exactly the same problem as Christopher Lewis
happened to me just recently (from 8/8/2003). Reformat and reinstall don't help. Please help!!!!!

I've tried to Msblast fix from Windows, and installed all the updates for Windows 2000. I am going to shortly have to admit defeat and completly reinstall windows, which is something I really don't want to do. BY I sympahtise with you, any luck yet??

Hi, i have the same prob too. But guys, after formating my pc and reinstall win 2K, the same prob still appears.Mine is the svchost error. So just to inform those who wana try reinstall the os, it wun help. I'm now trying to dl the SP2 from microsoft and then install the patch file(oni works on SP2) from microsoft. Duno if it helps??!!

SP2? Has this got some advantage over SP4, anyway when I tried to instal it it told me I couldn't run any of the service packs as I've got SP4 installed and can't unistall it as well I can't uninstall or install anything! (The only way I installed SP4 was by downloading the entire thing at 140mb!) Am baffled by it all.

After downloading all the SP (must install SP4 first) from Microsoft, as well as run fixblast.exe, it appears the problem is fixed. I have 2 computers both with Win2K. The one with all SP installed before does not have this problem. So the SPs are important, maybe.
Good luck to all.
But this worm costed my company and myself more than $1000 (working time).

I have use few hrs just to dl and install the SP2. After that, I scan thru my pc using removel tool from sysmantec. Then I install the patch file from microsoft. Now the problem seems to have disappear. No more svchost.exe error after I connect to the net. Mayb the SP does help in preventing worms! I uses SP2 becoz when I tried installing the patch file, it states it requires at least SP2 and above inorder to work. Therefore, i went to install it. Think shld work even if u have SP3/4. Any good firewall software to introduce?? Or how to set up firewall??

You will find the answers you need at:
sophos.com/support/disinfection/blastera.htmlIt worked for me. I had the same bizarre cut and paste errors, etc...........
