Comment:

when i run dcpromo to uninstall active directory, it tells me that "the domains in the forest cannot be found", i suspect this is a dns problem but am very inexperienced in DNS, i do know that the 4 subdomains in DNS exist _mscds _sires _tcp _udp.
Any help would be gratefully recieved.
Thanks in advance.

Those aren't domains. From the sounds of the error message, AD is already uninstalled.

not the case, i'm afraid. I can still access active directory domains and trusts and when i log on to the DC, i am logging on to my domain.

Is this the only DC you have?
If it is not, and it is the forest root DC, you can not demote it if there is any other DC's in the domain.
If you have already taken the forest root controller out of the domain either by shutting it down, or wiping it out, you might be able to seize the role, then after it is the root controller you might be able to demote it.
