Was running Win98 just fine, connected at roughly 56k every time and now that I upgraded to Win2k Pro it will only connect at exactly 28.8k every time!
I've changed the port settings, modem settings (in two places) and have run out of things to check! I have no clue why it's doing this....?
It's connected to COM3 (although in system it only see's COM1?) and is a 3Com Windows Modem ISA ADI I guess..
Any help/suggestions?
Much thanks,
Nick

Hi,
As I guess, modem is internal... How does Win2k see the modem? Check device settings in My Computer-->Properties-->Hardware-->Device Manager-->Modems. If Win2k supports your modem, it's _correct name_ (not "Standard 28.800 Modem"!) should appear in it's Properties tab. There also should be the "drop-down" box with speed settings (up to 115k).
Post your results.
Good luck,
Alex

1) Upgrade the modem drivers.
2) Go into the Control Panel and select Add & Remove Hardware. Use this wizard to install 2 more Com Ports. Then reinstall the modem to Com Port-3.
Should work fine.

Is it a winmodem, if it is an you cant find windows 2000 drivers you are probably not going to connect at a higher speed. And are probably lucky it works as good as it does.I had a machine with a winmodem in it and when I switched that machine over I was luck to connect at 12k.I eventually replaced all my modems with hardware ones and they connected at a higher speed.

It *was* a WinModem.. USRobotics 56k Winmodem to be exact.. It behaved so *weird* under Win2k pro! Under Device Manager if I autodetected it initially saw it as a 'USRobotics 56k winmodem' but when it installed the files it changed it to a '3Com ISA Modem'. When I did a query on the modem it read off as being a 33.6k unit (hence it slow connection speed).
I decided it probably wasn't Win2K compatible and just switched it out with a new PCI modem... Last night I was back up and connecting at normal speeds...
God bless winderz..
Nick

I have a USR modem model # 005687-02. Trying not to throw it out just yet, especially since it worked under WinME just fine.
After installing Win 2000 Pro and applying all Service Packs I only get 28.8 connectivity. USR's website says no specific driver to use other than that packaged with Win 2000 Pro. Anything I can do to get it back to 56K status?
It is running on COM3 even though the only com port showing in h/w devices is COM1. I checked modem details and its set to 115200 as highest speed.
Another msg spoke about adding COM ports but that did not work - ports would not create without error.
Tks in advance,
Sam
