I just did a fresh install of windows 2000 and everything is up and running with one exception. I'm not able to import .jpg or jpeg files into MSpaint.
Normally after a fresh install the "Save as .jpeg .jpg option is NOT available in MSpaint until you open Paint and import one .jpg image/photo...then the "Save as .jpg, jpeg option appears and is always available. After this fresh install however I'm not even able to import a .jpg file into paint. I tried saving in paint with a .jpg extension but it wont work since its still a .bmp file. I also tried going into Folder Options and changing to open .jpg files with MSpaint but still get "invalid or not supported file type" when I try to open a .jpg with paint.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Dave

How are you trying to "import" a jpg into paint?
If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.M2

I open MSpaint and then use FILE OPEN and navigate to a any .jpeg or .jpg file and the file opens in paint...then I can add text or draw on it for diagrams, cut and paste etc...then SAVE AS .jpg and it works fine.
The "Save as .jpg" option is never in paint after a fresh install but once I open a .jpg in paint the extension appears and is there permanently...but I've never had a problem actually opening a .jpg file in paint before on multiple installs over the years.
In fact it was able to import .jpg files in MSpaint on this PC as of a few days ago prior to a fresh install. I have multiple logical partitions and all my documents are on the other partitions.
There doesnt seem to be a problem finding files on the other partitions either. Word97 Mpeg MP3 .BMP .JPG files all open fine. .BMP files open in MSpaint normally and .jpg .jpeg files open in IE or Irfanview (which they're normally associated with).
Its only when I try to open .jpg files in MSPaint a message box pops up it shows the file path I'm trying to access and says....
"Paint cannot read this file. This is not a valid bitmap or its format is not currently supported."
This is a Head scratcher....any ideas?

***** I FIXED IT!! *****
Did some more hunting and found mention of others with similar problem but only after microsoft office 2000 install. Then they lost ability to import .jpg into paint or no .jpg save option.
The suggestion was it might be related to graphics filters or permissions. I'm admin so I have permissions....and I dont have office 2000....BUT...it ocurred to me the only microsoft program that MIGHT have graphics filters....and that I always install after fresh windows install...but havent yet. WORD 97! I made an error in mentioning that word97 files open earlier bcus I assumed they would.
Installed Word97 just now....and it opens .jpg files in paint no problem and the SAVE AS .jpeg .jpg interchange format option available now too after my first import.
Thanks anyway. Wanted to post my solution in detail in case others have the same problem.
Happy Holidays! :)
Dave
