Comment:

I tried installing avg on this machine that came into the shop. installed and ran all spyware, and cleanup utilities.

However xoftspy and avg wont complete the install. Xoftspy just hangs up on the install. AVG gives me this error msg "undefined error: cannot find windows class (1407)."

Ive tried intalling it in safe mode and its still a no go. If anyone has any suggestions i would greatly appreciate it.

The error you post is unknown to me...

Xoftspy is not an item/util I know about; and avg has a few issues with some ME installation (I know of two); and possibly XP also... But for W2K (and '9x) no issues that I know of.

However, what happens if you just attempt to install avg and forget about the other util?

Also I'd be more inclined to use AdAware (lavasoft.com) and SpyBot (http://www.safer-networking.org) - both freebie utils for domestic environs; and rather than avg I tend to favour avast (avast.com) - another freebie for home use.

There are criticisms that avast has a less than friendly/easy to use front end...; I (and friends - with no real PC techy knowledge) haven't found it so, and it auto-updates like a charm...

ccleaner is generally OK too for most M$ OS; but I did find it caused problems for me with XP-Home... It effectively disabled XP via something in the registry (was never quite sure what...)...; I had to revert to restore point prior to my date of attempted installtion of ccleaner... Since then I have avoided it with XP for the present.

Never having seen or heard of Xoftspy, I Googled it and, other than a bunch of less-than-kind reviews about it's effectiveness, I couldn't find out too much about it. Is it safe to assume it's a program that runs as an active scanner and that's what hangs up? Is it detecting AVG and somehow locking up?
If so, maybe try uninstalling or disabling Xoftspy to install AVG, then reinstall.

Just as a recommendation, if you want to pay for your protection - Have a look at Pest Patrol

No they dont have anything to do with each other. Xoftspy isnt the reason avg is hanging up on the install. Ive installed both of these programs on many of computers i have worked on and have never run across a problem.

Ive come to a point where the comp is restarting itself now over and over again. Something has happened to it. I am in the process of running seatools to see if i can find anything there. Ill let ya know what happens to the machine.

Thanks for your responses

Mario

I have had problems with avg myself and found that deleting the entire program and then going to the registry and deleting anything and all that is part of avg then rebooting and it installs.
You can use the program regseeker to find avg and grisoft in the registry.
