One of the advantages of NTFS is indeed the security requiring authentication for file sharing. I don't understand your objection to sharing files, especially since upon your own admission, it's much faster. If you only want periodic sharing capabilties, just disable the sharing on the particular folder you're accessing.

"I don't understand your objection to sharing files"

my main objection is security with microsoft file and printer sharing service

I have read alot of bad stuff about it although some is the users fault for not setting it up properly

I would probably only ever need to upload a few gig aprox once a month. would a windows share be worth it? and they are "ALWAYS ON" using system resources right ?

Is this a home network? Are you on a broadband connection? If you are using a router behind a modem you are pretty well protected from the outside world. Are you are concerned about the inside world?

As I said, if you don't want the shared folders to be accessible by a share, just disable sharing on that particular folder.
