I need to transfer some (big) files from a w98 pc (with no network card) to a network capable w2k laptop. So far I have read about using direct link cable with various configs or an rj45 patch lead. As this is a one-off connection I don't want a jackhammer to crack a nut. Could someone tell me the easiest (and most cost effective) method to do this. If you could also let me know whether a) if both pcs have network cards, you would need anything else (ie. does a crossover cable feature in all this, and if so, what is it ?) b) if you use a "direct link" cable what software do you need ?

Typically you can use a null modem cable to transfer files across pc's without network cards. Null modem cables connect to the parallel ports on both pc's. I think you can also use the serial port, but I have never tried this. I use WinLink software and the file transfer rate is megafast.
