took a long time to restart comp.

I been having a problem with taking a long time restarting the comp. after i installed in win. 2k... I don't have many programs running and I already scanned my whole system and there are no viruses, I used to use win 98 and it restarted much faster than this, my main problem is that when i do a start>>shut down>> restart or shut down, it will say "saving your settings" for like 2 mins b4 it finally say "windows is shutting down"... I was a t my friends' house and when their comps are restarting, they only stay on that "saving your settings" line for less than 5 seconds and jump right into "windows is shutting down" and then the physical restarting process, I'm wondering if tehre are any pro out there that can help me out with this newbie problem... thanks a lot in advance, really appreciated.

Click Start and go to Windows Update and install SP4. You should also install the critical updates from this site.

I work with my 3D max program and there's a huge compatibility issue with SP-4 that's why I stay with SP-3 instead... is there another way to solve this??? anyone, pls? thanks

Does the Event log say anything similar to 'Could not release your profile from registry...'? If so, try to recreate your user profile.
