Have a friend's computer. He caught a nasty bug, so I thought I'd reformat it. HA! It won't let me reformat. Right now I have 3 versions of Win 2000 on there from trying to reformat, and I can't wipe them off. For some reason, it won't give me the option to reboot or repair when I start up. Any help?

You cannot format the partition that contains the operating system that is running on that partition.

In other words, you need a boot disk to boot computer and run format from. Best bet is to use fdisk to remove/recreate the partition(s), then re-format & reinstall.

How are you trying to reinstall? You really haven't provided many details, and since you haven't provided the Manufacturer/Model of the machine, I can only assume you don't have a Restoration CD.

So, boot to the Windows 2K OS installation CD and when prompted, delete all partitions, recreate, format, and install on C.

How to install W2K:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304...

http://www-w2k.eecs.berkeley.edu/in...

http://www.petri.co.il/install_wind... (refers to Server - but the same for Pro...)

But do you really need to re-install afresh?
What is/was the problem originally?

Go with Jennifer's solution!
