Too long to shutdown
Name: Clint Date: June 7, 2003 at 13:57:31 Pacific OS: Win 2k Pro CPU/Ram: Athlon 850Mhz / 512MB
Comment:
When I shutdown my computer, as it is shutting down, it says "Saving your Settings" and stays on that screen for about 3 minutes. Then it says "Shutting Down" for about 20 seconds, then it turns off.
Does anyone know why my computer is taking so long to shutdown? Everything else is fine with it. Any thoughts?

I suggest you go into add/remove programs and look for a security patch/fix number 329170. If it is there, uninstall it. That patch is known to slowdown the shutdown process on many Windows 2000 systems.

Another way around it without removing the fix is to lower the amount of retries to unload a profile (which I think that fix screwed up) go to start>run>gpedit.msc>administrative templates>system>Logon double click on: Maximum retries to unload and update user profile enable it and set it to something smaller than 60... maybe 2 or so (I haven't actually had it unload successfuly since that patch mentioned above)

I removed the Hotfix 329170, and that "Saving your Settings" screen only takes a second or so the way it should. But the "Shutting Down" message is still taking longer than it should. Any more thoughts???
Thanks for your help so far.

I have removed 329170 and set the max retries both to Zero and to Five, and when I tried to reset this afternoon after half an hour I gave up and hit the reset button. If you do find a cure PLEASE TELL ME WHAT IT IS!
