Hi Derek,
The thread I originally posted this message to won't allow me to post any more. (It's too old.) So this is the only way I know of of getting in touch with you. Here's the shortcut http://www.computing.net/windows200...
I wanted to tell you that I finally got this thing to work. I tried another writable CD, as you suggested. This time I was able to read it on the windows 2000 machine.
Thanks again for all your help
P.S. - I didn't need to finalize it. Good thing too, because I wouldn't have known how. By the way, how does one 'finalize' a burn using Nero 5?
..... John

That would be just what that feature is for
... it's not like you're new here John - Derek mainly checks Win9x (but has been known to stray)

jboy is right, I don't stray to non-9x systems very often, only when posts are general.
On my bundled Nero 5, finalise only applies to CD-R's.
It goes like this:Open Nero with the Wizard as usual, then carry on through the normal procedure, as if you were going to add something more to the CD.
When you have the two usual panes, select File/Write (from top menu).
The Wizard will come up and offer to Burn the CD. DON'T LET IT!
Instead (IMPORTANT) hit "Close Wizard" button.
This comes up with the Write Screen.
Tick Finalise and hit Write button.
Note: Next time you use Nero you will have to hit the "Wizard" button if that's what you normally use.

Thanks Derek,
And I suppose finalizing prevents further writings to that disk??

Perhaps someone could tell me how to send private messages.
John

Yep, finalizing fixes it permanently but it does mean that it will run on about anything except a washing machine.
You send Private Messages as given bottom right of each post. These are not intended to be a substitute for raising issues/problems on the normal forum, otherwise you will only get help from one person and nobody else will benefit or join in.

Actually, your best bet is to work from 'MyComputing.Net' for a couple of reasons:
It's a little known fact, but the PM feature via the message icon is disabled for the originator of the thread - - this is by design, to discourage 'private solutions'
Best is to use 'MyComputing.Net' (Your Private Message Center) - - it's all there, and pretty self explanatory, but you must employ the *exact* username (case & spaces count)
In general, use the PM to talk to some'one', but if you have a question, post it for all...
Gosh John, years of participation here have really imparted a lot to you ; )

Hi Derek -
Thanks for the claification.
Anytime I have tried to use the private message function I received the following:
"Private Message
As the original poster of this thread, you should not use the private message feature to communicate with people who replied to your question. Instead, please address all concerns you have using the reply form on the message itself." I was not aware that there is a private message function in My Computer.
jboy - You acknowledge the above, yet you snidely remark:
"Gosh John, years of participation here have really imparted a lot to you ; )" when all I was really trying to do here was to update Derek on the results of his efforts on my behalf, and thank him for his help.
What am I missing here?
John

When you go to My Computing.Net the heading "Private Message Center" is located at the top, next to "Message List". This works irrespective of your posting status.
DerekW

Aw, don't be like that - for a fact, I remember you posting back in Win9x, before you adopted your 'Zulu' name. We're trying to explain to you (however painfully) that a public post is not really the best way to convey a personal message, nor is addressing a question to a single contributer the best way to receive an answer - if that's not sinking in, well, try not to get your panties all in a bunch
It just amazes me how unfamiliar you are with the forum - I guess these years have been wasted, to some extent
That's honesty, not 'snideness' - take it as you will
... the interests and rights of some individuals take precedence over the interests and rights of others

Hi jboy,
Don't think I didn't know this wasn't the best way to communicate? Of course I knew. I've tried, many times, to send private messages to people, and when I received the 'cannot do' message I figured there was something not working in the forum. But I couldn't find any other way, and wanted to tie up this loose end, and thank the person that help me, so I used the unorthodox way.
I've received help from you on a few occasions. We've had good conversations, and I appreciate your help. I hope this doesn't mean we'll have to stop dating??
John
