I currently have XP Pro and I was thinking of doing a fresh wipe with 2000. I just wanted to know how does 2000 perform vs xp pro in gaming/home use? Should I just stick with xp pro if im using it for these purposes? Any opinions would be great BTW my specs (Pretty Bad) Are as follows..

P III 500MHz
320mb pc-100 sd ram
Geforce 2 Mx400 64mb
10gig HDD

Thanks.

XP hogs a lot of RAM. I wouldn't recommend XP for anyone with less than 512MB.

I run win2k pro on my athlon 500 w 512mb ram and used to run with 256MB and 128 before that. The performance has been excellent in all cases.

I don't like all the extra eye candy in XP and win2k's lake of makes it somewhat speedier than XP.

Win2k is NT5. WinXP is NT5.1. Not much difference huh? Drivers for win2k are pretty close if not the same as those used in XP so you can expect mature drivers. Gaming should be the same as in XP, maybe better since you should have more resources available.

I went from XP to 2000 and would advise anyone to do this change..
Eventhough they are built on the same system, w2k is definetly more stable and works with much less memory than XP.

Dude--
Be sure to use Win2k Pro with Service Pack 3.
You don't need SP1 or SP2.

It's a great operating system and I just love using it stand-alone-fashion.

XP is fat, bulky and much too heavy for most of us,and besides that, many device drivers are hard to find.

Good luck

I run both on two different machines. Either one is a good. With your config. I would recommend installing win2000. Windows xp works fine even on one of my older pent3 450. It a little slower then windows 2000. (unless you invest some time and cut some processes off) stick with win2000 you will have a little more control if you are a newbie.

Uh, XP Pro rocks, as for the eye candy comment, you can change XP Pro to look just like 2K, in fact I find XP Pro more stable then 2K, and much more compatible with games than 2K, 2K Pro can run games but some you need to config the OS much more. Also I run XP Pro with 256MB of ram and it's fine. I'd stay with XP Pro if you play games.
