Hello, I downloaded service pack3 to upgrade my win 2000 service pack which was a lower version - I think 1- and then restarted it. but the PC doesn't boot up anymore. I used startup disks. the first time it asked for the administrator password and I didn't know that so it quit. the second time I got this massage: The file atapi.sys is corrupted. any advice?

how could you forget the admin password? do you have a user account with admin privs? can you get into last known good?
what type of disk controller do you have? is it a Promise controller?
the fact that it "asked" for the password seems to indicate that it is trying to do a recovery. did it ask you for the password, or did it ask you to give it an admin password?
the atapi.sys driver is probably being used to read the CD rom. do you have a W98 or WME boot floppy? if you do, and you boot into it with CDRom support, you should be able to do a Dir E:

1. i did not install win2000 initially. someone did it for me, that's why i don't know the password. and i always logon as a user and am never asked to put it a password.
2. at this point it seems that the password no longer matters since i'm now getting this new message: the file atapi.sys is corrupted.
