I've never worked with it before, but I thought that I could configure it on my Windows 2000 server, then remote control into my server from a Windows 2000 client, and it would be just like sitting at the server. Is that right?

yeah you 're talking about terminal service. use terminal service client creator to make client disk and copy to your client computer and everything else is picakeik

better yet install install adminpak.msi from your win2k server i386, and you don't have to worry about your client license. and it comes with bunch of other administrator tools.

You can also download tsweb from Microsoft and then run a terminal session from any webbrowser. I manage a few Win2K servers that are in a few states and I can remote into them from one location or when I'm on the road. If you are using this over the net then be sure to enable data compresion.
