Hello all! I am trying to set up telnet on my win2k machine. I have the telnet service active and port 23 is open. When I try to log onto the machine from another computer off the network it tells me this: "connection lost. Server allows NTLM authentication only." How can I get around this? I need to be able to access this machine from another location. Any help would be appreciated.
Also, while I am posting...anyone have a suggetion as to the easiest way to set up FTP access with win2k? I know, 2 HUGE questions!
Thanks!
Dave

TELNET...
win2k can understand only NTLM authentication. But i cannot see any problem regarding that. I do the same thing and even access it from a linux box.FTP...
FTP server is inbuilt into win2k.
Goto control pannel, then administrative tools. There you'll find internet service manager. Fire that up and you'll get options for configuring ftp,iis servers. But before that install IIS in your machine. If you're ot sure goto add/remove programs and click "add/remove windows components" on the left. There check IIS and follow instructions.

And here is your solution.
Start Telnet admin
c:> tlntadmn.exe
option 3> change registry settings
option 7> ntlm
change value into 1
stop and start tenet services
add to local users e.g.
user: telnetuser
password: abc123
go to client on your network e.g. NT4 machine
Start telnet
Connect to your window2000 machine
Telnet will ask for username and password
fill that in and you are connected
UNCORK THAT CHAMPAGNE

From what I've read above, those solutions won't work. I had the same problem and here's how to fix it.
1. Go to Start, Programs, Administrative Tools, Telnet Server Administration
2. Choose #3 from the menu (Display / Change Registry Settings)
3. Choose #7 from the submenu (NTLM)
4. Say Y (yes) that you want to change it. Based on your problem, it's probably because there is a 2 as the current value of NTLM.
5. Enter 0 (zero)
6. Say Y (yes) to confirm change
7. Press 0 (zero) to go back to the main menu
8. Press the following in this order:
5 enter 4 enter 0 enter
There you go! You can now log into telnet from any computer in the world. If you have any further questions, email me at admin@mtd.ca
