ftp.exe and tftp.exe are both normal files in Windows 2000. Together they take up about 56k of hard drive space, so I dont think space issues really come into play here. As for ftp.exe recreating itself after you delete it, that is a little strange. My advice would be to stop going through your system32 folder assuming things are viruses when you really have no idea what you are doing or talking about. Download a good virus checking program and use that instead.

i'm going through my system32 folder because i've been getting a lot of programs trying to access the internet that i have not installed or services i am using. i assumed it was a virus because i read on a virus site that it was a file that is dropped by a trojan.

and those few programs trying to access the internet were not detected by norton corporate or anti-trojan.

The system probably recreated the ftp.exe when it saw it missing, and part of a system integrity check, as Sly suspects, it may be being recreated by a virus.
Sly, do as Lolyd says and get a good virus program to check your system- at the very least you can use http://housecall.trendmicro.com, which will do a free virus check and cleaning. Some if you really want to restrict what tries to "talk from your machine", try downloading and installing the free version of Zone Alarm. It will detect whatever is trying to communicate in or out, and let you block or permit the action.

Agreed. Everyone needs to download a good firewall program. Then a lot of these problems wouldn't happen. A good virus checking program and a spy-ware/ad-ware checker wouldn't hurt either. I use Agnitum Outpost firewall, AVG anti-virus, and Ad-Aware 6.0, all of which are free downloads. I highly recommend these 3 programs. I have had absolutely no problems with my computer since installing them as far as viruses, trojans, etc. The internet is crawling with this stuff, so you have to take it upon yourself to protect your PC. Nobody is going to do it for you.

ftp.exe is a windows prog
with it you can access ftp sites
it recreates itself because windows 'says' that. it's written in some registry line
it's no virus and if a virus would overwrite the file windows would re-overwrite ;-)
it's just nothing, don't concern about it :-)
