It's kernel level information. However, it should be 0 bytes. How large is it?

Right now its 17.8 MB.

I used Windows XP and it had the same problem (but twice as large).

Actually, according to microsoft, this is the folder which Windows (I think ME and above only... meaning XP and ME right now) uses to store the information for 'system restore points'... these points allow you to restore your system's critical files to what they were like at an earlier point, just incase of emergency. If you unhide system and hidden files, you will see the size of this folder, and it can grow quite large. Its not recommended you delete it, seeing as system restore points are very useful.

to make it smaller, go to Control Panel > System > System Restore, and check 'Turn off System Restore on all drives'. it should be safe to delete then. i havent tried deleting mine yet, since its only about 40 kb (i switched it off directly after installation), so do it on your own risk.

Actually in that window instead of checking 'Turn off S.R. for all drives' you can go into 'Settings' and just make it take up less room.

I deleted mine (since it took up 600mb of space), and have yet to see any side effects. Just so you know -- To gain access, go to "System Volume Information" properties --> Security, add your name and check "Full Control".

I think, if you turned it off, all information should be deleted.

But me I have a virus problem with system volume information. I can't get it scanned with my antivirus programme as I can't find it at all to change the settings in 'property'.

If your SVI folder is that large it may be signs of a virus. Ive seen this before and am dealing with it now with the w32/Klez worm. The virus creates dummy files in that folder, ultimately expanding it to sickeningly large sizes and slowing the machine. It should be safe to turn off the SVI feature and or make it smaller
