My system locks up and when I go to Task Manager it shows anywhere from 95% to 99% high cpu for System Idle Process. Does anyone know what could be causing this problem? thanks

System Idle Process value of 95% 6to 99% is normal during times when no programs or background service is actively running/doing things. This System Idle Process is a software mechanism to reduce power going through the CPU when it's not in use. Your lock up problem is probably caused by something else. Some worms could lock up your computer, as well as poorly coded program with memory leaks.
Yes, exactly. Try running your computer a while without any add on software running. See if that makes it stable. If it does, then it's only a matter of finding out which program caused the lock-ups.

I had the same problem with Win2000 server. If you are running Roxio EZ CD Creator 5 try stopping it in task manager. Watch your CPU usage if that corrects the problem try going to www.Roxio.com and there is a patch for this. BUT.... it did NOT work for me I uninstalled Roxio and installed Nero cd burn. Good Luck Craig

While I am working on windows 2000, 2 to 4 windows are open and suddenly computer hangs. I open the task manager and it is fine then though the system idle process shows 100% and goes down immediately. What needs to be done.

What is the system idle process? On my task maneager it is alwayse really high. If i click on, "end process" will it speed up my computer or just screw it up? Also is this the reason my download speed is only 2k/sec or is that due to something else?

I have this problem too. Usually accompanied by lots of disk activity. I am assuming it is some caching operation or something.

Summary: Binary, The system idle process sitting at 99% is totally normal. It is not eating up any of your processor time at all. when the cpu isnt busy it just reverts to the system idle state in the OS proce...
Summary: Peggy: This sounds really strange. The CPU usage plus System Idle Process usage should roughly equal 100 percent. System Idle Process usage is by definition is how much percentage of the CPU time is n...
