I recently download some files from Dell web site for doing update driver. Those files do self-extracting diskette set. After I click setup by running the program I downloaded, it ask me to insert 1 formatted diskette into A: and press enter to continue. After I hit the enter, I always got am error message, "the system cannot find the file c:\winnt\temp\~wzs2978.tmp\de123451.exe".(The file and dirctory are example) I checked the dirctory and file, they are there. I checked the properties, the system has full control on it. I don't know what's wrong. I run a couple of files having the same problem. I recently did some security implementation on registry and file system by following our security policy. I couldn't figure out if any setting will cause the problem. I'll appreciate if anyone can give me a help.

I've found, in some Win2K workstations, that if their TEMP environment variable is pointing to the TEMP folder inside [x:\Documents & Settings\(username)\(...)], some installers that need first to decompress themselves to the Temp folder will exit all of sudden after decompressing, just when you were expecting the install screen. I deduced that although programs can decompress their files to the specified temporary folder, they are unable to access them later because the way they are programmed. In my point of view, the only difference with your program is that yours displays at least an error message.
The fix for this, in all my cases, was to right-click the My Computer icon, then Properties, and then modify the TEMP and TMP (if defined) variables to point to, let's say, [x:\temp]. This simplified path is readable by the installer program, thus enabling it to continue. Why don't you give it a try?Hope this helps!

Andres,
It doesn't work. After I modified the TEMP and TMP variables to point to c:\temp, it showed same error, "system can't find the file c:\temp\~wzs2978.tmp\de123451.exe".
Thanks for your help,
Sophie
