Heya,
Recently my hdd went bad and I had a friend work on it for me. He fixed the problem with the hdd (was w/ the master boot record) and reinstalled win 2k along with some other stuff. I recall hearing about some "security feature" in win 2k that prevents taking a hdd from one system and putting it in another. Will I encounter any problems if I go and get my hdd back and put it back in my system since it was built up on another system? Thanx for any feedback.

The security frature you eluded to is for Win XP. It's copyright protection.

As long as the 2 systems are similar you should be able to run it in your original machine. You'll probably have to tweak it a bit with driver corrections etc.

You may encounter problems. Unlike '9x which is 'usually pretty friendly' regarding moving an drive with an installed OS to another PC (i.e. a different MoBo) W2K is not that helpful.

Folks have observed in the past that changing the MoBo in a system does not work well for a drive already installed with W2K...

Usually it means a re-install of W2K; at the least you may have to do an 'Upgrade' of current installation to rewrite critical driver/registry info. to reflect the drive's 'new' home...; I don't think a Repair will do it.

Here's how the drive swap went: all of the more significatn drivers were deleted from the system it was on. When I put the other system it ran through a bunch of new hardware detection wizards and found new drivers for the new hardware. It's up and running fine now. Thanx for the feedback.
