I have Windows 2k in my laptop with service pack 2. But i started getting the Svchost.exe error often whenever i connect the laptop to the internet. So i tried to fix up the error by running the fixblast exe given by symantec and then running the patch file given by microsoft for svchost.
After fixblast was run, it said there is no virus found and the i ran the patch file. but now i am not able to see anything on my Winnt, network & dialup connections,my network places directory.
My pictures, control panel directrories look different.
There is no item available in the Add or Remove program's list and so on.......
I even tried to install Service pack 4 for win2k, but no use of it. I am not able to select properties of any item that is there in the services list.
THE FIRST TIME I TRIED TO INSTALL THE FIXBLAST AND THEN I CHANGED THE OPTION OF RPC STARTUP TYPE FROM AUTOMATIC TO MANUAL AND THEN TO AUTOMATIC, AND THEN IN THE RECOVERY's FIRST FAILURE I CLICK TO "RESTART THE SERVICE", LATER I INSTALLED THE PATCH FILE ON THE LAPTOP.
But now there is no way i am able to fix the problem.
Please anyone try to give an perfect solution for this problem.

Had the same problem on our windows2000 server, managed to fix it by by running system file checker.
At the dos prompt type SFC /SCANNOW

I have recently got a svchost.exe error, *and the same problem exist even after i reformatted the whole hard drive... (I reformatted my c-drive many times already, but the same program error is still there!)
here is the error message and the problem:

these symptoms continued untill I restart the PC. But, once I connect to internet... the same proplem occured within five to ten minutes.my condition:

Thanks, and I wish all well.

Have you tried a zero fill application for your hard drive? Even if you format the drive, there are still some magnetic data left on the strip inside. A zero fill utility erases EVERYTHING on the drive. I had a virus that stayed on my drive after I formatted it about a 1000 times. I zero filled it and it took care of the problem.
This is the only way I can think of to get rid of your problem. Sorry you have to lose all your data once again. you can pick up the utility from your hard drive manufacturers website. Hope this helps!!1
have a good one

Formating your hard drive or filling it with zeros does not get rid of the blaster worm people! You get it from connecting to the internet. It doesn't matter how many times you reinstall the operating system. You have to install service pack 2 and the patch from Microsoft, then you wont have the problem any more. Stop formating drives already.

If you have the error svchost.exe in 2000 Professional.
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type Regedt32
4. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUN
5. DELETE THE VALUE "WINDOWS AUTO UPDATE" MSBLAST.exe
6. EXIT REGISTRY EDITOR.
7. DOWNLOAD A COPY OF SERVICE PACK 4 FROM MICROSOFT FOR 2000 PROFESSIONAL.
8. LOAD SP4 (WHEN IT ASK FOR ARCHIVE SAY YES)
9. WHEN IT SAYS DO YOU WANT TO RESTART THE COMPUTER SAY NO (THERE IS A BOX TO CHECK)
10. DOWNLOAD THE PATCH FIX FROM MICROSOFT.
11. RUN THE PATCH FIX FROM MICROSOFT. WHEN IT ASK TO RESTART GO AHEAD AND LET IT RESTART.
12.WHEN THE COMPUTER IS BACK UP GO INTO TASKMANAGER UNDER PROCESSES AND MAKE SURE THERE IS NO MSBLAST.exe RUNNING.
13. IF YOU HAVE THE FIXBLAST.exe FROM SYMANTEC RUN IT NOW. IT SHOULD COME BACK AND SAY NO VIRUS COULD BE FOUND.
14. THIS WILL REMOVE THE VIRUS BUT ONCE YOU FTP FROM THE INTERNET THERE IS NO WAY OF SAYING YOU WON'T GET AGAIN. I WILL GIVE YOU A LOCATION OF WHERE TO SETUP UP A FIREWALL TO KEEP THE VIRUS FROM COMING BACK.

DON'T ALLOW THE COMPUTER TO REBOOT AFTER SP4. LOAD THIS PATCH IMMEDIATELY AFTER THAT. THEN REBOOT THE COMPUTER. GOOD LUCK

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUNand do not see the value
"WINDOWS AUTO UPDATE" MSBLAST.exeI'm running Windows 2000. Should I look elsewhere for it?
I've been trying to fix this since Wednesday and feel like it is a lost cause. I originally started with the same errors outlined above (not copying/pasting, svchost.exe error messages, etc.). Now it has escalated: When I attempt to connect to the internet (dial-up), I get the following error message:
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\ProgramFiles\AT&T\WnClient\Programs\WNConnect.exe
abnormal program terminationAlso, I attempted to update to service pack 4, but my CD drive is not showing up under "My Computer." The Floppy drive is showing up, but the service pack is too big to put on a floppy -- unless you zip it, which I don't know how to do.
I've lost a lot of sleep and work time over this, and since I'm paid by the hour this is costing me dearly.
Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated!

Hi
Since you have tried so many things you might as well try this :-
1) click start,settnigs,control panel,Administrative Tools,Services
2) this will display you a list of service that run on your system . Go to Remote Procedure Call , there will be 2 of them , double click n the 1st one .
3) click on the recovery tab and set all values to take no action from the drop down list . Click apply , ok .
4) download this pacth :- " http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c8b8a846-f541-4c15-8c9f-220354449117&displaylang=en " .
5) search for the file msblast.exe and rename it .
6) Restart your computer
7) update your antivirus and scan your system for any traces of the virus left .
I have tried this on several systems and it has worked , though I am unable to gurantee that it will work everytime , but lets just hope that it will for you .
Best of luck .
Kevin

Kevin,
Thanks a million for your quick reply. When I double click on Remote Procedure Call (the 1st), nothing happens. Any thoughts on how to proceed?
Thanks again --
Kathleen

Hi ,
Please try to follow this dell knowledge base link if you can connect to the internet .
Thanks

Sorry forgot to paste the link the link is :- "http://support.dell.com/us/en/kb/document.asp?DN=1083290 "

I've started to get the svchost.exe this week, and urls and links have ceased to work.
Which of all the above advice is best to start with.
I've updated my virus cheker, and scanned, but found no evidence of msblast.
