I keep getting a "svchost.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows - you will need to restart the program" error on startup. If i restart sometimes its ok, and other i get an error message that the system will shutdown because of an error in 30 seconds. Can anyone help out with this.

Thanks

Jason

As a bunch of tech flunkies, we here agree that microsoft has added another "feature" to the bloat ware they produce which, again, only further destabilizes their whole OS.

Check for this virus:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.dlder.html

Then be sure to reload service pack 2. This resolved the same problem of us this morning.

I'm having trouble with svchost.exe too, every 10 seconds my cpu jumps to 100% - it seems to be gradually getting worse as now my machine is getting slower and slower as well as the odd infamous blue screen.
I've installed SP2 and no change, i've also checked for viruses - None! as far as i can tell - latest upgrades and all that installed.
any ideas?

I got an interesting alert on from my Norton Personal Firewall (Yep. I see that I got you guys's attention!)

TCP: inbound
application svchost.exe

attempting to access your computer (from a remote address guys!)

Since Norton sniffed that one coming, I decided to 'Block' that inbound application.
What a weird situation? I wonder, does Microsoft know that their svchost.exe does stuff over the internet?

Are you *SURE* it's inbound? I keep getting alerts from Zonealarm that SVCHOST wants to go OUTBOUND to my DNS, yet I don't have it listed int the ZoneAlarm list of programs!

I'm also getting that error on a lot of my business's machines. I've tried a lot of stuff but to no avail.
in regards to SVCHOST.exe trying to access the web either through inbound and outbound TCP/IP maybe its Microsoft trying to send and receive info from your PC/laptop.
I have Norton's running on my mail servers and also on local machines so if w3.dlder.html was present I'd be worried it got through so much.
Also have machines, some with SP1, SP2 and some without SP and the ones that have SP2 are giving me the most problems.

Well thats my imput into this.

There is something not too clear about this issue but anyway after trying several things like uninstalling programs, pcanywhere, email clients, compuserve, aol any dialing related programs, virus softwares, you name it I've tried it, now everytime it happens I try to backup the important files and reinstall window 2000. Actually i only see it in win2000 pro.

We're getting that too..First svchost spews it's message about generating errors, and then other applications (Office 2000) begin to crash.. If anyone has any ideas it'd be appreciated.
Note this is in win2k pro

I was getting this same error message. Per one suggestion I saw here, I downloaded Service Pack 2 and installed it again (without uninstalling original SP2). Problems went away and machine now works great.

Give it a try, if you can.

Stephen
