I just have had a strange problem for a few days. Everytime I connect to the internet svchost.exe gets down with an internal error. I just copied this file from a friend, but that doesn't help and I checked my disk for viruses, but nothing was found.

I know someone who has this problem and he knows of lots more people with the same problem. He has found the W32/CultA virus on his pc.
see: http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/w32culta.html

Hope this helps. If I have anymore info i will post it.

Make sure you have the latest update for your virus program. Only the most recent patches will catch this new virus that causes the svchost.exe error.

yes you arent listening. Download at least SP3 but i recommend SP4. download a removal tool for the blast worm virus i can sent it to you if you want it. scan your pc and tada he finds it well what do you know it is on your computer and your virus scan didnt saw it how rude!!! but seriously after this install SP4 and download the security patch from microsoft. Then your pc is working fine again

Ooglenz is perhaps a little rude about it, but he's probably right. If you do like he says, it should solve your problem, whether you find a virus or not.

LloydFoss-- while you are correct that ooglenz is rude, you're wrong about that fact that he's probably right. In fact, he's almost always wrong (including now), and seems to be 14 in addition to that.

I was experiencing the same error. When I updated my virus update definitions it found that my computer had the Welchia Virus and that was causing the problems.

I downloaded the following fix:

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/FixWelch.exe

and saved it to my desktop. Do the same, then:

Double click the icon
Click START to begin the process and allow tool to run
Restart computer
Run the removal tool again to make sure your computer is clean

If you have Windows ME or XP you will need to turn off System Restore. Don't forget to turn it back on again afterwards.

I hope this works and it certainly fixed my svchost.exe error

Good Luck!

Hi All, I seem to be having the same svchost.exe error that everyone here is talking about. I have done all the suggested work around but nothing has worked yet.

What I have done:

-installed SP3 for win2000- I don't trust SP 4 yet.
-installed the security patch from MS
-updated Norton to the latest files - clean check
-Downloaded and started the worm checks for blast, welchia, and sobig -all came back clean
-search for those worm files -none found

I'm stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thank you, Vivian

temporarily u can remove it by installing a personal firewall and block the following ports 4444, 4445, 135 & 69...

currently AVs canot detect or find any trace of virus on the local workstation..

Hi there,
This may be for Vivian... who had the svchost.exe problem. We had the same problem, or a similar one, and we found out
it was the Blaster virus (more than likely).
We installed a Blaster patch, which was found at http://www.globalhauri.com/html/.
We used the worm.win32.blaster patch located on the left hand side of the website page. You may have to delete your other anti-virus program first and install one at the Hauri website, but we are not sure.
Good luck.

Sue

I had MSBlast, that lead to welchia, I changed my system date and welchia which killed msblast, killed itself, and I still have the svchost error. Anyone have any clue as to how to fix this problem. It makes my comp not able to copy paste or open links in new windows once the error happens. Anyone know what really causes this....don't say either of the worms cause they are gone....if anyone know's of a fix that isn't removing the worm please share with the group.

this is for janetd.

I had the same problems, copy and paste, drag, link, etc. I went
http://www.globalhauri.com/html/
and installed the blaster patch as the instruction said. The process was easy and fast, not like that of msn. The patch detected my windows system automatically, so i didn't have to choose anything. Since I installed it, the error message hasn't popped up so far.
