Hello Everyone,
I was surprised to see what I saw when I came into this forum. SVCHOST error were the first two on the list. Well that's why I came here to find out why? It started a few days ago, about the same time as the blaster worm virus started, don't know if there's a connection or not? Anyone that can give some input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks All,
Larry L

SVCHOST.EXE is most definately connected to the blaster worm virus. Look in your \winnt\system32 folder and see if there is a file called msblast.exe If there is, then you have the virus. It's not a fun one to get rid of either. The virus blocks you from getting to the Microsoft Update web site so that you cant download the patch needed to fix it. Fun fun. Lots of people having the same problem right now.

I think that Svchost.exe was on your computer before Blaster was spread. I discovered it about 6 or 7 months ago. On my computer it has something to do with my ISP software... Whatever, it won't allow me to delete it. Now that is strange, and scary. I contain it through Zone Alarm Firewall. I don't allow it to access the internet. Please let me know how u got rid of it.

SVCHOST is system software for services basically, that file is not the one you want to delete. Delete msblast.exe... If you can't get to the patch on MS site, goto the one on Symantec's site...

Thanx... I don't think that I have MSBlast.exe. I downloaded the patch as part of service patch 1 and 4 sometime ago.

ok....
listen the answers that you have been getting are all wrong!!!
This has nothing at all to do withe microsoftworn BS that has been going on!!!
True, the worn does give those symptoms..... But this has nothing to do with the worm and has everything to do withthe basic setup in win2K!!I have found the solution to this problem.
The solution come in 3 parts:
First, you need to install service pack4 from microsoft. (which by the way will solve the "worm problem" )
Second, you need to download from Microsoft and install the file:
Windows2000-KB823980-x86-ENU
Lastly you need to contact me to get some very specific WIN2K OS install instructions to tweak the install correctly.... This install instructions are sorta complicated, so i am not gonna write them all here.... but if you will email me @ pdy1969@yahoo.com I will send you a complete instruction document in ms word format that will tell you how to complete the third step!!

dont listnen to phil, he will prolly give you a virus document. the only thing you have to do is go to symantec and dl the removal tool if you dont got it download the security patch from microsoft.
Phil sent it to me to see what the document is i wanna know!!! :))) i know for sure its a virus but i will bounce it back with 999 virusses :))

I completely agree with ooglenz as noted in thread 50616.

How do these people know that you are not a hacker and wanting them to contact you for 'specific instructions' that will allow you access to their system? What are you afraid of? Someone seeing your instructions and saying.. "Wait a minute, what is he up to?" Why not post them here, and if they have questions then they can email you directly about the procedure... makes more sense in my opinion...

I still say the svchost error is related to the scanning to that micorsoft put out. I have loaded the patch. I have also ran the Scanning Tool. If I run the scanning tool to scan my own patched pc, I get the svchost error. If I scan other pcs, then I can generate the svchost error on those pcs, and the error appears at the exact same time on all pcs, if I scan the whole subnet. Sounds like an 'undocumented feature' from Microsoft.

Hello Everyone,
Thank you all for your input, good or bad, I don't know yet. I'm in the process of downloading Service Pack 4 but I have a dial-up connection and I haven't been successful yet as it doesn't seem to accept a download manager and when my phone rings, it stops it and I have to start over, but I'll get it then see what happens.
Thanks again,
Larry L

get a firewall and close port #135.
this worked for me. to know the whole story seasrch Google with keywords "RPC vulnerability 135"
this worked for me. i tried the blaster patch. but this is a bug, not a worm problem.

I've this kind of error and i read this forum last night.. apparently i kept on searching and found out that my error is caused by welchia worm..
Try looking at this document :
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.welchia.worm.html
It also causes svchost error. hope it is helpful.
