Stupid event sounds tricks

After upgrading from WinME to W2Kpro my startup and exit event sounds won't play but all the other event sounds work correctly; have tried redoing sound themes, saving them, relogging on etc etc. All sound devices work correctly and the events will test play fine through control panel. No device probs, all else OK. What would prevent activation of the sounds? Thanks for any info, or advice. SB live, 512mb, P3 1ghz i840, same problem with any login or user.
