I used QuickTime once, now every time I start my PC, the logo appears in the toolbar.

Though I close it, it comes back again...

Could anyone let me know how I could stop quicktime from starting, every time I start the PC.

thanks

Infuriating how programs do things like this, isn't it? Real Player is another nasty that does this too - only now they hide it so you are more likely to not stop it!

Ok . . . Open QuickTime, go to Edit - Preferences and QuickTime Preferences. Should bring a window called QuickTime Setting - but this will depend on your version - On mine the choice of "Browser Plugin" gives me the choise of turning off the System Tray Icon . . .

You may also want to CTRL+ALT + Del to see if you have Real Player lurking in the background. If so....

Open regedit - if need be, back up your registry - the key is in either HKCU or HKLM and software - microsoft - windows - current version - run. you will see the key for real player either delete the key or you can edit the value to remove the hiding bit of the command. NOTE if you do the latter you will have real player open next time you start - in which case edit RP preferences and turn off the system tray.

Good Luck . . .

Expanding upon that question, I went to download quicktime a few weeks ago..the installation program started, but I decided I didn't want to install it, so I canceled. Their stupid icon shows up in my system tray anyways and it doesn't appear to do anything at all. Anyone know how to get rid of this without just removing it using msconfig. I want to completely get it off my system. Thanks.

If you click the icon or right click it - can/do you get any options of any kind?

The ulitimate answer will be to go through your registry. Use the MSCONFIG to find the NAME/Location of the file running. Use that info to search your registry (ideally with the file name) and delete the keys for it.

Do, of course, make a backup of your registry first, just in case!

Another answer would be to re do and complete the installation, shut down and restart and then uninstall it. . . .

Good Luck . . .

Hey, in response, when I right click, it does give me a menu, and an option to exit. All the menu items are blurred out..except "Quicktime Web Site", "Open Favorites" and "Open Recent". I will probably take the advice, go ahead and install the software, then uninstall it. Sucks that you have to do that though, they need to get their stuff straight.

Before you do the Install bit/routine, do try the registry editing.

Check your MSCONFIG for the location/name of the file (I have a sneaky suspicion that it is QTTASK.EXE) and then search you registry for the keys. . .. Then delete each key, then delete the offending file .

Back up registry before you do though . . .

Good Luck. . .
