ok, i posted this problem earlier with responses but as it went down the page people stopped posting even when i answered their questions so sorry for reposting but i really want to fix this.
ok to answer all the questions i was asked, i have all the updates for my windows 2000 Pro version. SP4, all security updates, Direct X 9.0c, and all others.
My problem is that whenever i start my computer in windows 2000 as soon as the splash screen is done it loads into a black screen. My video card is a PCI-Express ATI Mobility Radeon X600 with 128mb of VRAM. I have reinstalled the drivers 4 times now and have even wiped 2000 and reinstalled with no results. It starts fine into VGA and Safe mode but won't go past 256 color display.
I was wondering if maybe having PCI-Express might cause problems. My system is a Gateway MX7515, i have a gig of ram, an AMD Athlon 64 4000+ with 2.6Ghz. windows 2000 recognizes all the hardware correctly too including the graphics card. Please help!!!!

It sounds as if you have tried all the standard stuff that should work. Is the card broken perhaps? If you can, try the card in a different machine and see if it works there and post back.
Have you tried the standard drivers off www.ati.com, they often work better than the stock drivers. You could also try updating the BIOS on your motherboard.

Gateway MX7515 is a notebook right? A black screen prob like this when using an LCD monitor normally suggests that the resolution is set outside of the screens capabilities esp if the prob only kicks in when the OS has loaded. Can you connect a CRT monitor to it?

I have the same problem using PCIe with an MSI nVidia 7800 GTX and Win 2000 Pro with a NEC MultiSync 95. In my case I also did the following,
using digital to analogue adapter.
Direct connect to monitor = Black screen after XP Boot/Loading screen.
Safe Mode direct connect = works fine
connect using an old KVM switch = works fine
connect using a new IOgear KVM switch = Black screen.
I also tried using several resolutions with different refresh rates, and it did not make much difference.

yeah but the problem is its a laptop. cant seat card in another machine or hookup the screen differently and the resolution maxium is 1280x800, but i haven't tried a screen in the VGA outlet yet which i will in a minute but the card is fine. It works on windows XP Pro right now with no problems.
