Hello there,
I want to configure DHCP server on my w2k server machine. Knowing that assigning a static ip address to the NIC is ideal for this setup. When I assign a static ip (192.168.1.6) to this NIC and test the network (which includes I.E browser and pinging)non of them will function. but immediately i reset the NIC to "Obtain an IP address Automatically" the browser and pinging all will begin functioning fine.
Despite these I went on to set the NIC to static mode, and went on to setup and configure the DHCP server, after the setup, I just cannot authorise the DHCP. when I attempt to do this a pop up window comes up sayin "Access is Denied"
what could be the way out please?

You should have had a Static IP assigned before you promoted your server to a DC. My recommendation is to demote the server and then assign a static IP and then promote it to a DC again.

You always want static IP's for servers. Especially the first DC in your domain/forest as it will have DNS on it as well.

Thanks Curt,
But the thing is that if i set NIC to Static mode the network will simply be inaccessible both the LAN and the Internet (I mean NIC simply will not communicate). shall I go on to assign the static address and then start all over?

change your routers scope to be something like 192.168.0.10 thru x amount of wkstations you have. .1 will be the gateway and .2 would be your server.

Now assign 192.168.0.2 to the server and you will be fine for both accesses.

oh I forgot to add that before you dcpromoed the server if your dns was pointed to the isps dns server you can corrupt the entire install according to MS. This is because you can't write entries to the isps dns server. You need to set this server up as its own dns server which forwards to the isps dns servers.

thanks wonderer,
but after followng your instructons and after thorough observation i found out that when i connect the NIC directly to the DSL modem, i have instant and stable internet connection but when i unplug them from DSL and plug them to the Router i will be experiencing random connections and disconnections, this happens sponteneously. switching off and on both the internet and the LAN.
What could be the way out?
