Comment:

I have a Windows 2000 machine that takes forever to load. It has a P500 processor and 256 MB of RAM, and it still takes forever to load.

Anyone have an idea?

Thanks in advance for your help :<)

by forever.....how much time are we talking about. Hardware devices that are not working correctly can cause windows to take extra time....because Windows is doing a analysis of why its not working right. On your machine Windows 2000 should take less than two minutes to boot....if everything is working right. Unless your cranking up a web server or something on boot up.

I have 2000 running on an old P2 300mhz W/128
mb ram. Boots as fast as win9x. also on
P3 700 w/256 mb ram. The only time I saw this
system boot slow was on an old Compaq.

Post your system specs. How much drive space?
A completly full drive will slow it down,
also check for fragmented drive.

I suggest you remove startup items in the registry if you have had the computer awhile because things tend to endup in there alot. You can find them by going start->run type in regedit. Hit okay, click on the plus next to HKEY_local_Machine, then software, then microsoft, then windows, then current version and highlight the run folder. On the right hand side are the items that start when windows loads. The ones you dont want or need can be double clicked and add a minus to the end of the value data. That will cause it to not load next time windows loads. Also check the startup folder in start->programs->startup for the profile you are using. Those items in that folder start when the OS starts as well. Email me for further questions.

Win2k does have a slower startup than Win 9X. But I guess that's what makes it a very stable operating system. How long does it take to start up? I have a Pent.4 1.7gig machine 512megs RAM, and yes, it still takes awhile to start up, even removing many startup items in the registry.

Check under event viewer for any failed service starts or hardware inits. This may help you narrow your search for the problem.
