Is is possible to start a Windows 2000 machine with a start up disk, similar to that of Windows 98. What files are needed on a floppy to do this if it can be done. I would like have the same type of functionality as would be available when you start your W98 system with a "start up" disk. IE: dir, fdisk...etc

Generally, the standard W2K installation disk should be more than enough, once it starts up, go into the recovery console (not the automatic one, the manual one) and VOILA! you have quite a few commends at you disposal, type HELP at any time to read a list of all the commands. Good luck

I appreciate your answer Spinal, but I am not sure if I posed my question correctly. Either that, or I just don't quite understand your answer. If you put a windows 98 start up disk in the floppy drive, then turn the power on, it will boot off the floppy, load some generic drivers and eventually end up with a DOS screen and an A: prompt. You can use dos commands to navigate around or fdisk or format and such. I am wondering if there is such a disk with files to start an NTFS platform with?

You can create startup disks with the 2k cd. Look for the directory folder called "BOOTDISK" or something like that, then go inside the folder and look for the application "MAKEBOOT". Then, it'll open up a dos prompt that will tell you that u need 4 floopy disks. That's it. Good Luck!
