my pc spontaneously reboots for no reason, turns off then starts up again then keeps going fine! I'm not doing anything particularly demadig at the time if aything at all, its set not to suspend or go on standby at all, the monitor is set to stay on. the power supply is relatively new, 250 watts, I"ve got a cd burner and three hard drives on it, it powers up fine, the hard drives are set to spin down after thirty mins of inactivity, generally everything I access is on one hard drive

There is an option in startup and recovery to stop the reboot on an error.
What seems to be happening is there is a fault which would normally give a BSOD (blue screen of death)which you dont get right now because the OS is set to reboot when the crash happens.Turning it off will not stop the crash but would allow seeing the error code to try troubleshooting the problem.

what's been said above is correct but you might have hardware problem too, check the cpu fan, if your fan is spinning slow, your cpu will heat up and it reboots, and I guess you have already check your power supply.

You mentioned you had a cd writer do you pehaps also have software for this installed named easy cd creator?
I have a problem with 3 pc's at work. First thing in the morning when they are turned on they power themsleves off halfway through booting the turn themselves on then off the on again.
Thing is once they start they are fine and it is just this multiple boot to get the Pc started initially that is the prob.
I have the following error code datestamp 3ad7ad60 - ntoskrnl.exe

I'm also having the problem of spontaneous reboots. This, so far, only occurs under XP.

I have an AMD 1800+ with a VIA chipset. And I also have a creative Audigy Platinum.
I've heard this combination can cause these reboots and that you should install the latest VIA 4in1 drivers. (Didn't help for me though).

Regards,
MJ

I've been having spontaneous reboots that don't seen to have any common feature. I have to add that I have just replaced a motherboard and cpu. I traded a P6SET-ML and 550MHZ Pentium for a K7S5A and 1.46GHZ
Athlon 1700+ XP. I also needed to get a video card since the P6SET-ML had onboard video and sound. I got the Nvidia MX 100/200. I've added a new 40gig hard drive as well. Okay, your're probably thinking, plenty of room for problems. I'm running Windows XP Home edition.

Until I read this thread I hadn't given the Startup and Recovery settings any thought, even though I have changed them before. Now that I've slapped myself in the forehead and uttered the obligitory "duh!", I'll probably have better lick tracking my problem down.

Now to add to the good advise that Wayne has allready gotten, I'd upgrade the power supply to at least 350 watts, if I were you Wayne. Three hard drives, CD burner, video card, problably a sound card, fat cpu, lots of fans to cool it all, I'd say 350 at the least.

Good luck.

Peter
