Hi,
Regarding the default language setting using
Regional Settings in the Control Panel, the English version of Win2K with or without
SP1 allows you to change the system default
language to another one successfully.the English version of Win2K with SP2 fails
to change it.I don't know if it works or not if you first
change it then apply SP2. I guess not....Regards,
Dai

By what Microsoft is saying, this is not an essential update. Unless you are having issues outlined in Microsoft buletins on what SP-2 fixes, I wouldn't. If it ain't broke, why fix it.

I would install it. The concept of If it's not broken don't fix it' is a good one, but unfortunately it may be broken and you just don't know it. That's how a lot of security issues are discovered. I would say there is a small risk of the SP causing any trouble and if you select the backup option you can always uninstall it if it gives you trouble. I'm installing it on all of my servers so I guess I'll find out.

Here's my 2 cents...
I have loaded up about 50-60 W2K boxes and I support them for about the past 4-5 months...
I have found W2K to be very stable, reliable...these boxes were all either no SP or SP1...My home machine, also W2K and built the same way as the ones at work was running great with SP1 installed...
I use Outlook with a POP3 account to Yahoo with a cable connection...
After downloading IE5.5 update from Microsoft...everything worked great...I then downloaded SP2 and applied it...
My IE locked up...I could not access the Inet, could not access Yahoo for my email...
I had to completly wipe out W2K and re-install...
Don't know if it was caused by the IE5.5 upgrade, or SP2, or the combination...but over the next couple of weeks I should get a chance to test it out and see what caused it...
My point being...If you have the latest IE5.5 upgrade installed, do NOT install SP2 until we find out more...
Steve

I installed SP2 today thinking that it might correct some freeze-up issues with my computer; (I'm thinking it might be Win 2000). Did SP2 fix it? Not so. It magnified my problem. There were times I could not even get the operating system to boot. Freeze-ups were within 1 minute of boot-up. Thankfully I clicked START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, then removed Windows 2000 Service Pack 2. It brought my computer back to last installation using Service Pack 1.

Hi all,
I have installed Win 2000 SP2 for about a week (using express edition---> about 10-20 MB).
Before installing it I found some errors in Event Viewer (WinMgmt and Perfctrs ERRORS).
After i install it (making backup), then there is no more ERRORS again.I think it is worth it.

I agree with steve, there seems to be a problem with IE 5.5, it may be the fact that it's high encryption and the service pack is actually for machines using IE 5.0.
Anyway I would stay well away from it for the moment and wait for more feedback to materialise.

For those of you running MSIE 5.5 with 128 bit encryption.... install the Service Pack for Windows 2000, then REinstall MSIE 5.5....

I installed SP2 on my Dell PIII system running W2KSP1, with IE5.5SP1 (128-bit). All apps work great, including IE5.5 (did not need to reinstall IE). As per the pre-install info, I made sure all apps were closed, and stopped the service for my anti-virus(and my disk maintenance software, diskeeper in my case, just be sure) beforehand, ran the SP, took 20 minutes, as noted, works great. Of course, with MS, I do cross my fingers, just as a extra step (chuckle)

One problem exists for sure (another guy here reports the same): if the PC goes into Standby, trying to wake it up (for example with the mouse) ends up powering down the PC instead!
If anybody has info to fix the problem, please write me.

After i installed Win 2K Sp2, every thing seem Ok. but dial-up network not working, any one can help ?

After installing W2k SP2 on two machines (previously SP1), I get frequent freeze-ups on the consoles. Stop the Explorer task resets the desktop and things stay ok for anywhere from 10mins to 3 hours until it happens again. On Exchange2k server, after about 7 days, WinMgmt.exe spikes to 100% and stays there. Only a system restart resets. Removing SP2 fixes this issue. My laptop however seems fine with SP2. I'd recommend avoiding SP2 until SP2a or SP3, unless you have a compelling reason. You should apply IIS hotfixes instead.
