I use a notebook at home: Win2K, 128MB memory, Pentium III 1Ghz, Norton System Works and Internet Security 2001.
My notebook has been working well for a year, with no crashes (that's what I like about Win2K).
Yesterday I had broadband connection installed (I think it's DSL using a modem connected to my ethernet card (an Actiontec 56K modem and ethernet combo).
As part of the installation, a software called cFos was installed (using the version which supports W2K). There are now 2 problems.
After installing this software, my computer (or Win2K)took a long time to load. At first, the icons did not even appear until after a very long time (1-2 minutes). Later, the icons were not a problem, but the Norton Antivirus programme became a problem. Although the desktop icons and taskbar icons appeared, the Norton AV icon had a cross over it - meaning autoprotect is disabled. Normally the icon will appear with a cross but the cross disappears almost immediately. Using the task manager, I discovered that it was the Norton process alertsvc.exe which was always the last to load up. Now it takes over a minute for the process to load up (and for the cross over the icon to disappear). Meanwhile the computer is out of action until the Norton AV programme is fully loaded.
After the broadband installation, although the connection is fast, the disconnection becomes a problem. Sometimes (not every time), the system will crash after I disconnect the internet connection (whether by accepting the Auto-disconnect prompt, or by disconnecting via the cFos software). The blue screen flashes and the system restarts (by default my computer is set to reboot after system failure). The flash is too quick for me to read what the problem is (and I haven't looked at the event log, perhaps I should, though I don't know how). I saw once something about the memory on the blue screen.
My computer has never had any similar problem before. I have tried uninstalling the cFos software, but the problem with slow startup remains.
Has this got something to do with the memory? Although 128MB is not a lot these days, it is fairly standard and not that little. I have already configured the computer so that only essential processes are set to load up on starting.
Also the task manager shows that the memory usage is only about 80MB. Does anyone know what the problem is? Has my memory been corrupted (so that part of it is unusable or has been stuck with something)? Is there a way to find out what the problem is and to solve it.
Two things may be worth mentioning. After the CD installation of the cFos software, the system needed restarting, and the installation man said it's all right to leave the CD in the computer, and stupidly I did. This may have nothing to do with my problem (as the CD was not a bootable one).
The other thing is, I saw savedump.exe appear on the task manager once after a restart, although it is not always there.
I've got a backup of the entire harddisk (a few weeks ago). Is it worth trying to restore the old system? Will it work if the problem is to do with the memory?
Can anyone help?
