Non windows person so help gratefully received

I have a Windows 2000 server running on an ESX VM Node, it’s got 512Mb of ram and is a dual processor, and the problem I’ve got is

The Server runs like a dog with 3 legs, it’s really slow the Indexing service works correctly (i.e.) never finds documents that have been indexed.

I think the reason its running like this is that the integration team never test the Windows Fixes, are these easy to uninstall as I’m building an exact replica and want to remove the updates one by one to see if this helps.

Does anyone have any other tips for a slow server that shouldn’t be slow?

Cheers

Non of the Windows Hotfixes are known to make a server run slow so I would look elsewhere for your problem. Make sure it has SP4 installed. Look at any background services running that may slow it down (Anti virus programs constantly running is a common problem). Also look for any virus/trojan's which may be running using your sys resources, this again is common.
Defrag HD and do a general clean up (delete temp files etc). Monitor your resources such as HD space, CPU, memory useage etc to see if any of these are being maxed out (system monitor).
You do not mention CPU speed but 1/2GIG RAM is not massive for a server, depending on the amount of work you are expecting from it you may want to consider an upgrade.
Also if it is a Domain Controller the extra services can slow things down significantly, particullarly if it is replicating. Hope this helps

Please use windows maintence tool to clean up unwanted files ( temp, temp internet files & system/application logs ) then check the service packs and windows updates, and install spybot application to remove the worms & antivirus should be updated ,run the antivirus scan .Server is slow means definately there are viruses and backgroud services are run check in task manager and registry editor.
also you can check for viruses using trendmicro antivirus online scan url-http://www.antivirus.com
thanks.
